Doctorate in Mathematics

The Doctorate in Mathematics is offered jointly by three traditional universities in Valparaíso: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, and Universidad de Valparaíso.

Its academic staff consists of more than thirty researchers. The program lasts four years: the first year is dedicated to courses, followed by one year for thesis projects and research seminars, and the final two years are dedicated exclusively to the doctoral thesis in one of its various research areas: Non-linear Analysis and PDEs, Numerical Analysis, Control of PDEs and Inverse Problems, Statistical Modeling, Optimization, Stochastic Processes, Dynamical Systems, and Number Theory.

The main dissemination activity of the doctorate is the School of Doctoral Studies in Mathematics of Valparaíso, an event held every October, where mini-courses on topics related to the doctorate’s research lines are taught.

Graduate Profile

The graduate of the Doctorate in Mathematics program possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:

  • Independently design, formulate, and execute high-quality research in their area of specialization, with the aim of contributing to the advancement of mathematical knowledge.

  • Integrate into teams for the generation of new knowledge.

  • Conduct their work in accordance with the ethical standards of the discipline.

Support Instruments

  • The program is accredited by the CNA. As a result, applicants and regular students of the Doctorate in Mathematics, regardless of nationality, may participate in the National Doctorate Scholarship program developed by CONICYT.

  • Each of the consortium universities offers internal scholarships subject to competition.

  • Some academics in the program have research project funds that can partially support their students.
